Personal
Details |
No
personal details are known about Habakkuk, but he tackles a perennial question: how can
God allow wicked people to prosper? What fairness is there in Judah being punished for
relatively minor transgressions by people like the Babylonians, who regularly commit major
atrocities and seem to get away with it? |
| |
Special
Interest |
The
woes in 2:6-20 and the canticle in chapter 3 make some scholars believe this book was
composed for use in the Temple worship. Habakkuk has in fact arranged his material not to
write a history book but to stress his message: the power of God over human history and
the call to trust and faithfulness (see 2:4) The strongest challenge to a simple view of
God's justice in history was given by the prophet Habakkuk. |
| |
Time |
The
content of the book indicates that it belongs after Babylon had defeated Egypt at the
Battle of Carchemish (605 BC) and before the first invasion of Jerusalem in 597 BC. Its
messages are therefore slightly later than Nahum, and during the reign of Jehoiakim (609 -
597 BC). Habakkuk must have been roughly contemporary with Jeremiah.
