Best Known For his interest in rebuilding the Temple. The people returning to Jerusalem had built grand homes for themselves, but work on the temple in Jerusalem - an essential focus for effective national identity - had so far been neglected. A refurbished temple - on a less grand scale than the one built by King Solomon, which it replaced - was completed by 516 BC, so Haggai's messages all relate to the four years leading up to this.
haggai_1.jpg (2078 bytes) Special Interest Haggai brought messages of encouragement for the second wave of exiles returning to Jerusalem led by Zerubbabel (a diplomat and member of Judah's royal family) and Joshua (a priest).
Time Haggai gives precise dates, indicating that he began speaking to the people in 520 BC, during the reign of King Darius (522 - 486 BC).

Key Themes/
Messages
This period was one of mixed emotions for the returning exiles: great elation at being back home, with high hopes for the futhure; yet depression bordering on despair at the state of disrepair of their once-beautiful city and the uphill struggle that would be required to restore it. Haggai challenged the people to get their priorities right, and to place the worship of God ahead of their own comfort.
Key Passages The danger of economic inflation (Haggai 1:6)

Encouragement to rebuild the ruined temple (Haggai 1)

Reflections on the future splendour of the Temple (Haggai 2:1-9)

Promises of blessing for the obedient (Haggai 2: 10-19)

A message for Zerubbabel (Haggai 2:20-23)
