Process: Press Release and Cartoons

Background

"This is what was issued by the Walt Disney's PR Department: In reaction to news today (ed.August 24, 2006) that Pluto was demoted to the status of "dwarf planet," the Seven Dwarfs issued their own short statement:

"Although we think it's DOPEY that Pluto has been downgraded to a dwarf planet, which has made some people GRUMPY and others just SLEEPY, we are not BASHFUL in saying we would be HAPPY if Disney's Pluto would join us as an 8th dwarf. We think this is just what the DOC ordered and is nothing to SNEEZE at.

As Mickey Mouse's faithful companion, Pluto made his debut in 1930 – the same year that scientists discovered what they believed was a ninth planet. Said a white-gloved, yellow-shoed source close to Disney's top dog, "I think the whole thing is goofy. Pluto has never been interested in astronomy before, other than maybe an occasional howl at the moon." (At Jim Hill Media)

Your Task

Your group is to:

1. write a creative Press Release from the Walt Disney Studios about the demise of Pluto as a Planet.

2. create a cartoon book, in the style of this famous Studio, with at least 10 cartoons, showing the changes in scientific history of the Planets and basing one cartoon on the demise of Pluto.

What to do

1. Select a role:

  • Script Writer for the Press Release
  • Cartoonists

2. Brainstorm ideas for the Press Release and Cartoons. They should compliment each other!

3. Each Cartoonist is to create 3 - 5 Cartoon strips. From this collection, the group is to select 10 cartoons showing their interpretation of the changes to the Solar System definitions and bind them into a book.
