Learning
Outcomes

- Investigate the varied nature of career paths,
- Collect information on how employment affects peoples lives,
- Manipulate digital technologies to communicate workplace
information,
- Compare and contrast narrative descriptions of workplace
experiences,
- Simulate real-life work experiences in classroom settings

Introduction
Throughout this unit students create an imaginery
"Career Character". As the character grows in personality students build and
test their understanding of the nature and purpose of employment.
The imaginery career character grows in complexity as his/her
profile is strengthened by the students developing understandings of:
The Logical Career Path: which puts
peoples skills and knowledge to good use.
The Productive Workplace: where people and
technologies are combined in productive processes.
The Good Manager: who coordinates activities
that are effective, efficient, and equitable.
The Competent Worker: who can plan and
organise, use information to communicate ideas, work in teams, and use maths and
technology to solve problems.
The Purposeful Outcome: which results in the
production of knowledge or objects that benefit individuals, the community, or the
environment.
Getting
Organised
The class will need to be divided into eight groups (about
four students per group). Each group will investigate, throughout the unit, one of the
following 8 career categories:
- Work Around the House
- Community and Health
- Retail and Hospitality
- Office Administration
- Environments
- Leisure and Entertainment
- Transport and Travel
- Research and Development
The other sections of "On The Job"
web site (Careers Mall, Detective Game, Fun Activities [online and off-line activities]
and Life on the Job) have all been designed to complement and enhance this unit of work.
To begin the unit its important that the teacher gets
to know the students current understandings about employment.
