How to Use This Unit of Work

Preparations

This integrated unit of work has been created as a stand alone unit for students in the middle school. However, sections within this unit have been highlighted where you can use the other facilities of the "On the Job" web site. These facilities include:

• careers - see the information desk which leads off into 8 career categories. This section of the web site will continue to be expanded as people submit their jobs to "Life on the Job".
• online and offline activities, that can be carried out at school or at home
• information about people's experiences on "Life on the Job",
• links to career information and other useful links, including a list of web quests (higher order thinking skills required), and
• a Detective Game using the information contained within the Careers Market.

It is suggested that you browse the site to get acquainted with the resources present.

Getting Started

This unit of work is designed to be completed within 6 to 8 weeks and comprises of the following sections:

• Background Information

This background information contains essential and unusual facts about the Australian career scene. It is for both teacher and student use.

• Teaching Notes

These are written for the teacher in a suggested teacher/learning sequence. Knowledge and understanding developed in each activity are built upon in subsequent activities.

You will notice that the unit sometimes divides, for either younger or older students. This allows you, the teacher, to pitch the level of information and activities to suit your class or to expand the unit and give extensive work. 

Each activity has been categorised into the 8 Key Learning Areas (KLA).

• Student Task Cards

These support and enrich the teaching notes. They are written for the student but can be adapted to suit teacher directed activities. Each card is individually linked from the index page to this unit.

• Blackline Masters
  
  This is reproductible material and can be used at anytime as required during the course of this unit. Each BM is individually linked from the index page to this unit.
