Photographers operate still cameras, lights and light-measuring devices, and may also use computers to manipulate images digitally.
Professional photographers may have to carry heavy equipment. They may work on location or in a studio, and may also work in darkrooms, using chemicals to develop and print photographs.
Professional photographers need to have a sound technical knowledge, as well as an understanding of how visual images communicate. Successful art photographers demonstrate high levels of artistic flair, and an understanding of contemporary styles and trends in graphics, architecture and fashion.
Over the years, photographers have developed their practice into an art form as well as a form of expression and communication. Imagine how different our society would be without any pictures.

| Did you know? Photography uses a process of capturing light onto film. The word "photography", which is derived from the Greek words for light and writing, was first used by Sir John Herschel in 1839, the year the invention of the photographic process was made public. The first camera was actually a box with a hole in one end. If the hole was small enough, an inverted image would be seen on the opposite wall. Such a principle was known by thinkers as early as Aristotle (c. 300 BC).
