

Fitness instructors assess, tutor, train and supervise the
physical activity and exercise of a range of people in various environments such as:
- Sports and recreational centres;
- Health and fitness clubs;
- Gymnasiums;
- Outdoors;
- Or in small one-on-one type studios.

Fitness instructors ensure that exercise
is conducted safely and with the correct techniques. They are motivating, enthusiastic and
outgoing. A fitness instructors job may include:
The assessment of the needs and
capabilities of an individual in order to design an appropriate and effective fitness
program, including taking body measurements, conducting fitness tests, establishing blood
pressure, heart rate and lung capacity.
Providing instruction and advice to
people on how to exercise safely, use the correct techniques and use a range of exercise
equipment.
To assist in the maintenance and
cleaning of the centre and its equipment.
Interact with clients and work closely
with doctors, nutritionists/dieticians and physiotherapists.
Working shift work such as early morning
and late night shifts.
Important qualities to
have as a fitness instructor are: a high level of fitness, enthusiastic and outgoing
personality, communication and interpersonal skills. |

Fitness instructors, in order to become
qualified, need to successfully complete formal accreditation programme in the fitness
field. The accreditation can be performed through University or TAFE.
