Teachers

Process - An aid to Teachers

A. Students are to form into groups of 4 - 5. They are to remain with this group throughout this WebQuest.

You can decide whether to allocate groups or let the students decide for themselves.

HOWEVER...One group will be the F-900s (but unknown to the rest of the class! - You, as the teacher will decide who will become this group via a ballot or allocation).

You must stress to this group that they are not to let the other groups know they belong to this group!

This group will have to do a lot more work so you will need to be mindful of who you allocate to this group.

Challenge 1

Obtain enough cards (like recipe cards) for students to write on for this challenge.

At the end of this Challenge, each student should have handed in 10 Question and Answers (the correct answer indicated)

Challenge 2 - 1 vs 100

This challenge is based on the TV show "1 vs 100"

In preparation for this Challenge, you will need to carry out all the instructions on the checklist. Click here for the checklist.

Process for playing the Game

1. Select the first "one".

2. Have the questions ready beforehand on a PowerPoint. One question and answers per slide.

The "Mob" will be given 6 seconds to select either A, B, or C as their answer. There will be 2 - 3 observers and recorders to make sure that no changes of answers by the mob.

3. After the Mob have locked in their answer, get the "One" to answer.

If they don't know the answer, then they have 3 helps.

Helps

"There are three helps available to the '1':

  • Trust the Mob - The '1' must take the most popular answer given by the Mob, even if it's incorrect. Majority rules!

  • Poll the Mob - The '1' selects one of the three possible answers and asks for more information on that specific choice: A, B or C. The Host will reveal exactly how many of the eligible Mob members chose that answer.

  • Ask the Mob - Two Mob members are randomly selected after locking in their answers: one correct and one incorrect. The '1' will not know which is which, but can hear why each one answered the way they did. In practice, using this help eliminates one wrong answer, leaving only two potential choices." (Source: 1 vs 100 website)

4. If the "one answers correctly, then all the mob who have the incorrect answer are eliminated. Have a special "badge" or something that can be handed out by the observers so you can easily see who is still in the game. Ask the next question!

5. If the "one" answers incorrectly, they are allocated to help with the observers and the next "1" is asked to stand up to the podium! All the mob who have the incorrect answer are eliminated. Ask the next question of the next "one"!

It is suggested that you tell the students beforehand what they are playing for (what you have ready from the "bank").

For a 40 - 50 minute game, you should have ready 50 questions.

Optional: You can make this activity go for 2 sessions!

Challenge 3

For Challenge 3, you will need to select a student that you think will be a very good facilitator! Also provide them with helpers - researchers and producers!

Encourage the other experts - characters to research and know their perspectives so well as to portray this character with authenticity and passion!

There are only 7 Women amongst the 21 perspectives!

If you have more than 21 students, there are three extra perspectives - but remember to allocate extra students to help the facilitator first!

Challenge 4

This is an essay - students should know by this stage how to write an historical essay quoting both primary and secondary sources.

Conclusion

Each group is to create a presentation that focuses on the question:

"How have the circumstances at Federation shaped the way in which Australia has evolved?"

You will need to give each group of students time to deliver their presentation. Allow the F-900s more time!
