Team 1: Personal Profile - Ashleigh

Fairly petite with a sporty figure, at the moment my hair is dark brown with a bit of lime green through the fringe, brown eyes, I always get my nails done, I have to wear reading glasses (or am suppose to), pretty fair but in summer I go to the solarium.

Ambitious, determined, friendly, outgoing, co-operative, funny (I like to think so anyway), sociable and happy.

There are six of us girls in the friendship group at school. We hang out when we can at school.

Caitlin, Sarah and Monique are planning on going to Uni next year, not sure what to do!!!

I think that Emily wants to go travelling next year and Mel wants to just work full-time in retail til she figures out what she wants to do.

We are pretty close knit, but I know that will probably change when we leave college. We are always shopping together and going out. Em is probably my best friend out of the lot of them, along with Mel and Caitlin.

I get involved in things like Dance festival, fashion parade (modelling and designing for textiles), anything that teachers want me to get involved in I will do, although it normally takes them asking me for me to do it.

I haven’t really ever done the whole community service thing. I don’t see it as being a huge thing when you’re my age. I mean I buy badges for causes and things like that. I’m sure when I am older and have more resources at my fingertips that I will use this for the benefit of others.

Normally I play netball competitively, but this year I have decided not to take such things as sport so seriously, so I just play in a mixed competition.

I also gave up dancing seriously last year and prefer doing it at school or in my lounge room, this leaves me more time to do the things that I want to take seriously in the future.

Money? Money is just a part of life. I like it because it gets me the things that I want. That’s the only real benefit that I can see to having money at the moment because I don’t have the responsibilities that adults do with bills and stuff.
Possessions? I like owning things and going shopping. I always update my clothes, I have a shoe fetish and have to have the latest mobile phone. I guess some people might call me materialistic.
Religion? These days religion seems to be just another thing where there are crazes and trends. I can’t say I am all that interested, I am into spiritual and new age stuff instead.
Marriage? I would like to say that I am going to get married one day, but I don’t stress about it. A small wedding would be nice, no use paying for a huge do when the majority of people end up divorced within 2 years anyway.
Politics? I hate that kids these days don’t care all that much about politics. We are the future of our country and we don’t even keep updated about the running of our country, pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I would like to think that I am going to be an informed voter when the time comes.

Each to their own is my belief. I think people should do whatever it is that makes them happy.

I don’t have much patience for whingers and I think that people should take the drivers seat in the running of their lives when they get to a certain age.

I am a pretty nice girl I think. Some people can’t handle how opinionated and forthright I am, but I am not the type of person to be submissive. I am an old soul in a young body.

In an ideal world what would be your 5 year plan?
To get a degree in fashion design and become an influential member of a fashion design team.

To be happy and to be succeeding at my chosen career.

What things are standing in the way of achieving this?
There are a lot of girls out there who really want to become fashion designers, it is difficult to stand out amongst them.

I am also concerned that I might not get the grades necessary to get into university.

What might be some of the solutions?
Firstly I really need to apply myself to my school work, rather than always being off with the fairies.

I also need to develop and refine the style of clothing which I wish to design. I’d like to put together a portfolio which stands out from other girls applying for the same course.

If the University option falls through, I do always have the back-up plan of going through TAFE, although I would prefer to have an actual degree because that puts me in a better position.

How will you support yourself if you decide on further training after school?

I kind of want to move out of home as soon as possible, but I know that financially that isn’t really an option.

I work a casual retail position, so if I go to University I would need to get a lot more hours than I am getting now.

It is also a fairly expensive hobby to have (fashion) because you have to keep up with the trends and also purchase materials. Mum is happy for me to stay at home because she knows that would make things easier for me.

I feel bad but I am contemplating asking dad if I can move in with him because there is more room at his house and less of a distraction than when my two step-sisters are at mum’s.

I would be paying for Uni through HECS.

My family is pretty tight, even though mum and dad divorced 5 years ago and mum re-married.

Mum and dad both believe that us kids all need to follow our own paths and be responsible for our own happiness.

All of my siblings are moved away from home, but that’s ok because it means that I get more attention and the focus is on me.

Mum and dad are both pretty liberal and believe that kids can’t stay tied to their apron strings forever.

Mum and dad remain good friends no matter their differences and all that has happened. We have a great sense of family no matter how dysfunctional our family is.

What is important as far as values go?
That I maintain the same beliefs and that I build upon them as I learn more in the future. I hold close to myself my values and I normally shut people down who try to challenge them.
