In this webquest, Years 9 -12 students
are asked to analyse race and "hate" sites and begin to answer the question of
whether or not the information is true. The students will: (1) determine accuracy,
relevance, and comprehensiveness; (2) distinguish among facts, point of view, and opinion;
(3) identify inaccurate and misleading information; and (4) select information appropriate
to the problem or questions at hand. In the final stage students will be empowered to
combat "hate" on the net and discover the potential strength of the Internet.
They will be required to create their own web page to express their personal experiences
and views on race relations and identify ways in which they can combat hate crimes. Due to
the sensitive nature of this webquest, some of the material used may be offensive. Last

Students are given the following scenario "The School Board wants to eliminate field
trips in order to save money". Students have to investigate from different roles:
Accountant, Educational Evaluator, or H.A.T. Analyst (Hazards, Accessibility, Technology)
and provide valid reasons in support of or against the proposed funding cuts to
educational fieldtrips. They have to research the different elements and value of
fieldtrips. Some further options listed include: stage a mock board meeting where the
students debate whether or not field trips are an important part of education; have
students create a spreadsheet showing the costs for a certain number of field trips; have
students create a graph that shows their findings. The four field trips investigated are:
Marine Ecology Station; Royal British Columbia Museum; H.R. MacMillan Space Centre; and
Virtual Tour of B.C.

Title: A Soldier's
Life: The History of Black Soldiers and their Impact on the Status of Blacks in Canada

Young High School students are given
the task of acting as a junior newspaper reporter after World War I. Their task is to
interview a black soldier who fought in the War and write a human interest story about
that soldier's experiences. Was their experience of the war the same as that of other
soldiers? Are they also welcomed back as Great Heroes? There is detailed guidance for the
task. Students first read background information about the period and then print out a
sheet of 10 questions that will be the basis of their interview. Although there is
information about specific black soldiers who fought for Canada in World War I, students
must create an historically accurate interview with a fictional soldier, using the
information available. Numerous links are provided to a great variety of primary and
secondary information sources.

Designed for Year 7 students, this
webquest requires students to gather information from rich websites in order to analyse
whether it would be desirable to 'transport' cultural aspects from Ancient Egypt to a
space station set in the year 2525 AD. It necessarily integrates the concept of social
responsibility as students must consider what it is they value about their community.
Students are assigned to a "Transport" team of 5 students. Each person in the
"Transport" team picks a role from the following list: worker, craftsman,
scribe, nobleperson, and high priest. Students must also join a research team to research
their roles.

how the historical background of First Nations in British Columbia, Canada applies to a
current issue facing the Aboriginal peoples. Students have to "show the Premier"
how s/he could deal with this issue in a way that would support First Nations people and
be thoughtful, creative, and sensitive to First Nations people. Students will need some
background knowledge in provincial politics before commencing this webquest. The Fiirst
Nations current issues include Education, Land Claims, Forestry, Fisheries and Self
Government.
