YOUR PRODUCT
This
project means you are going to design and create a collection of 4 –
5 jigsaws with an Indigenous theme - telling a story that other
Australian children will understand.
The jigsaws have
to be for younger students (Preschool to Year 2) to help them
understand some significant Indigenous stories.
Along with the
jigsaws will be Colouring-in Books in a Kit.
YOUR
TASK
Although you will
be given responsibilities within your business (roles) each of
you will have to contribute to making this business a success by
getting your hands dirty!
You are to
research the stories of your region. You are to
investigate any stories that have already been produced and how
this was done.
Once you have
decided on your 4 - 5 Stories, drawn and coloured
them, you are to work out if you can get a commercial jigsaw
puzzle company to create the jigsaw puzzles for you or if you
will go into production yourselves.
You will need
to decide if you are going to have thin or thick pieces in your
puzzles and how you will produce 100 puzzles (to start with).
Along with your
puzzles, you are to create a Colouring-in Book about the
Stories you have made with your puzzles.
THINGS TO REMEMBER
It is very
important not to re-tell any Indigenous Dreamtime stories
- once they are told, they belong to the person who is telling
the story (making the jigsaw puzzle) and can be lost to the
Indigenous community.
GETTING STARTED
Here are some
ideas to help you along the way......to running "My Business
Rules" - remember you have to come up with an attractive
and educationally sound jigsaw and colouring-in book for
Pre-schools and Kindergartens.

storybooks, the dimensions, and cost:

Questions for you
to consider
- Who are
your competitors?
- What
puzzles are they making?
- What story(ies) will
you illustrate on your
jigsaw?
- How will
you find this story?
- Are you allowed to
use it? It is too sacred?
- What
technique will you use - screen printing directly onto wood?
- What colours, shapes, dots will
you use?
- Will it be
of different woods?
- Will it be
one animal from the Story or all the Story?
- Will it
require carving or manufacturing?
- What
dimensions will you use?
- How
difficult will it be?
- How will
you find out if your target audience (Pre-schoolers to
students in Years K - 2) will be able to do your puzzle?
- How will
you ensure that the puzzle is educationally sound?
- How many
pieces will be in your puzzle?
- How will
you present the jigsaw and colouring-in book for sale? In
calico bags? In boxes? Another way?
- What price
will you put onto your jigsaw?
